The founding chapter of Alpha Delta Chi was started at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1925. The founders wanted to create a place where Christian women could participate in Greek life without compromising their beliefs, to build strong friendships, and most of all, to create a place which would mirror Christ's love to their community. The sorority was originally named Areta, which means virtue in Greek.

The Tau chapter at the University of Alabama was founded in 2004 by Cassie Elizabeth Hooks, Heather Suzanne Dean, Virginia Marie Mathews, Mistie Rose Taylor Shoemaker, and Allison Dale Welch. Since then, the Tau chapter has grown to nearly 80 members who foster a sisterhood that embodies spiritual, social, and scholastic values.
